Zakat Calculator
Is zakat due, and how much? Enter your zakatable assets and short-term debts — the calculator checks the nisab gate, then applies 2.5% to the whole net wealth.
Zakat is 2.5% of your net zakatable wealth — total zakatable assets minus deductible short-term debts — provided that net wealth is at or above the nisab threshold and one lunar year (hawl, about 354 days) has passed. The nisab is a gate, not a deduction: once you are above it, you pay 2.5% of the whole net wealth, not 2.5% of the amount above it. Some online calculators subtract the nisab first — that understates zakat and contradicts the majority position.
The nisab itself is school-dependent. This calculator offers two standards: Hanafi (87.48 g gold / 612.36 g silver) and Standard / AAOIFI (85 g gold / 595 g silver), each with a gold or silver nisab choice. Contemporary advice often favours the silver nisab for general cash wealth because it is lower and therefore more people qualify — this calculator presents the choice, it does not make it for you. The nisab in currency is the weight times the current metal price on your zakat date, which you enter below; metal prices move daily, so a stale converted amount would be wrong.
What counts: cash and bank savings, gold and silver, business inventory and trade goods at current market value, receivables you realistically expect to be repaid, and shares held for trading at market value. What does not count: your personal home, personal car, furniture, tools of trade, and — on the Maliki / Shafi'i / Hanbali view — worn personal-use jewellery in customary amounts. On the Hanafi view, all gold and silver jewellery is zakatable. Enter your zakatable jewellery value according to your school. Debts: on the Hanafi view all debts are deductible; many other scholars allow only short-term / currently due debts (for example, only the current mortgage instalment, not the full balance). Long-term shares and locked retirement funds are disputed — this calculator asks for trading shares only and flags the rest. This is an educational estimator. It does not collect, hold, route, or distribute zakat. For a binding ruling, ask a qualified scholar.

How to use the result
- Enter the current metal price on your zakat date — do not reuse last year's converted nisab.
- Enter zakatable jewellery according to your school: Hanafi counts all gold/silver jewellery; other schools exempt worn customary personal-use jewellery.
- If you are below nisab or hawl has not passed, zakat is not due — the calculator shows zero, not a partial amount.
Frequently asked questions
Is zakat 2.5% of the amount above nisab?
No. Once you are above nisab and hawl has passed, zakat is 2.5% of the whole net zakatable wealth. Subtracting the nisab first is a common calculator error.
Which nisab should I use — gold or silver?
Scholars differ. This calculator lets you choose the standard (Hanafi 87.48 g / 612.36 g vs Standard/AAOIFI 85 g / 595 g) and the metal. Many contemporary scholars favour silver for general cash wealth because it is lower.
Does this calculator collect or distribute zakat?
No. It is a calculator only. It does not collect, hold, route, or distribute zakat. Give zakat directly to eligible recipients.
